Matcha's unique advantage is L-theanine, a non-protein amino acid that crosses the blood-brain barrier and increases alpha brain wave activity associated with relaxed alertness. A 2024 meta-analysis of 50 RCTs found that L-theanine combined with caffeine improved choice reaction time, digit vigilance accuracy and attention switching compared to placebo (Proceedings of the Nutrition Society, 2024). However, the same review noted results are often inconsistent and effect sizes are small. Coffee has no L-theanine. This is why many people report a "calmer" energy from matcha versus the jitteriness of coffee, though individual responses vary significantly.
Matcha delivers approximately 2 to 3 times the catechin content of a cup of steeped green tea because you consume the whole leaf. The primary antioxidant is EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate). Coffee contains different antioxidants (chlorogenic acid, melanoidins) that also have health benefits, it is not a simple "matcha wins" situation. The commonly cited "137 times more EGCG than green tea" claim comes from a single 2003 study by Weiss and Anderton that compared one matcha sample to one bagged tea under different extraction conditions. It should not be treated as a universal fact.

Drink matcha if you want sustained, calm energy without a crash and do not mind the higher price. Drink coffee if you want immediate alertness and prefer the flavour. Drink both if you want, plenty of people have coffee in the morning and matcha in the afternoon. There is no health penalty for choosing either.
